Hello Feline Friends

“I think Flowerkit getting caught in the trap was a mistake.”  Graypaw explained.  “I think it’s supposed to keep cats inside until the twolegs come and get them.  So if we put them in there and close it again, then nothing would be able to get at the kits.”  

Yellowfoot joined in with a thoughtful mew.  “And whoever gets to Treewhisker can tell him and get them out.  He knows how to open those twoleg traps!”

Violetwing scowled but feel silent again.

Yellowfoot And Graypaw goth pinned their ears back as Violetwing snapped at her son.

“I know it sounds bad, but mama, listen!” Graypaw whined, looking a little sad that she’d shot him down so quickly.

Violetwing couldn’t help herself: she hissed at her son in disbelief. “Absolutely not!” She snapped.

“There’s a hollow log in the territory...” started Yellowfoot.

“Wait,” Graypaw interrupted. “Flowerkit was telling me a story the other day. What if we put the kits in the trap we rescued her from?”

Violetwing scowled but reluctantly gestured for him to continue.

“That’s why I’m saying we should decide beforehand.” Replied Yellowfoot. “And, if you’re willing to listen, I had an idea in mind.”

Violetwing frowned. “That would be a good idea but for one thing: What if that cat is caught? No one will know where the kit is. They’re only a moon old. They would die out there alone.” She curled protectively around her children.

“I had another idea.” Yellowfoot Mewed softly, casting a glance at Violetwing. “If one of us is falling behind, they should have another place to go, a place where they can hide the kit they’re carrying and then run elsewhere.”

Graypaw stiffened. “Are you suggesting that the slowest one of us sacrifices ourselves?”

Yellowfoot shook his head vigorously. “No. But if one of us knows we’re going to be caught, we should be able to hide the kit we’re carrying somewhere safe, where it can be picked up later, and then run off in another direction to buy some time.”

Violetwing nodded, her expression grim. Their escape plan didn’t, realistically, have much of a chance of working but it was the best they had.

Graypaw looked nervously out of the den to ensure they weren’t being watched. Yellowfoot planned on escaping with the rest of Treewhisker’s family as well, having been in on the escape plan since its inception.

“Mountainfoot is on guard after me. He should be easy enough to distract with a conversation during the change. That gives you some time to slip out.” Mewed Yellowfoot.

Violetwing looked up at the young warrior, her blue eyes narrowing slightly. “As I’ll ever be,” she sighed.

Finally, Yellowfoot was able to duck inside the den, making sure the hanging lichen that covered the entrance was back in place before speaking.

“Violetwing, do you think you’re ready for the plan?”

Hazelpaw sighed and didn’t give the obvious response to that declaration.

Graypaw pinned his ears back, acknowledging Hazelpaw’s picture of reality but not wanting to believe it either. “If they wanted to lay a single claw on him, they’d have to tear me apart first.” The Tom’s growl was filled with resolve, but the family surrounding him knew that that same resolve did not regularly translate to his actions.

Hazelpaw shook her head with a sigh. “Like every other time you’ve asked me, no. I don’t officially get to leave the camp, Graypaw, and if Papa were here, well, we’d all know because Nightstar and Foxfury would be executing him.”

(Nah, she just lays like that. It’s what she’s used to! She’s weaned though.)

Graypaw stood up and padded over to Hazelpaw and Violetwing’s Side. “You haven’t seen Dad yet, have you?” Graypaw Asked this pretty much every time Hazelpaw came back from being outside the nursery.

Yellowfoot remained just outside, waiting a little impatiently for the crowd in the clearing to disperse into patrols so he could speak with Treewhisker’s family, as he always did when he was assigned to guard them.

Violetwing looked up when her oldest daughter entered the den and offered her a tired smile. She hadn’t been dealing well with Nightstar as the new leader and Treewhisker being banished.

Hazelpaw settled herself on the ground next to her mother’s nest, pressing against her side.

The adopted kit was huddled between her siblings, her muzzle still pressed against Violetwing’s body as she slept.

Graypaw flicked his ears at Hazelpaw, lifting his head as she entered the den.

Hazelpaw nodded a greeting back to Yellowfoot before ducking into the nursery. In the short time outside her eyes had adjusted to the daylight and now they had to adjust to the gloom again so it was a few moments before she could see well.

Violetwing was already awake and nursing her moon old kits, who had been born the day after Nightstar took over the Clan.

Yellowfoot dipped his head to his former apprentice cordially, unable to give her a proper greeting just yet. There were too many watchful eyes in the clearing as Foxfury dictated the day’s patrols. While the tom was required to address her as his former apprentice, as far as he was concerned he was still mentoring the young she-cat, hence the frequent hunting trips.

Graypaw was already in the nursery, having been confined to sleeping there by Nightstar while they figured out what to do with him and his sister. The tom had eventually moved out of Violetwing’s nest to his own, where he now lied.

Hazelpaw slowly sat up and groomed her pelt from scraps of moss before getting to her paws. Ducking out of the den, she crossed the camp to the nursery.

Nightstar eventually stood up and stretched, standing over Hazelpaw to give her a lick to her upwards-facing cheek. “You know where to go. Head to the nursery until sundown.”

Nightstar and the clan had decided that Graypaw and Hazelpaw were no longer allowed to continue their training on account of being not fully clan-blooded, and so the pair had been relegated to spending the days in the nursery with their mother, at the whim of whoever was guarding them on that particular day. Lucky for Hazelpaw, Graypaw, and Violetwing, today Yellowfoot’s familiar pelt was stationed outside the nursery. He took Hazelpaw and Graypaw on secretive hunting trips and walks out in the territory when he could.

“Good morning, Nightstar,” Hazelpaw murmured back. She’d learned quickly that she wouldn’t be allowed to remain silent whenever he spoke to her. It wouldn’t go well for her or any of her family.

“Good morning, Hazelpaw,” huffed Nightstar, his jaws parting in a yawn behind The she-cat. His tail was tucked in its usual position, right between Hazelpaw’s hindlegs, though it dangled limply over her inner leg instead of pressing right against her body.

(He’s just keeping her as a bedwarmer until his ‘real’ mate can join him. But there’s no telling what’ll happen to her once Violetwing runs away. )
