Swiftstream snorted but obliged, giving a soft purr as she spoke his name, “Riverflight.”

Riverflight offered Swiftstream a soft smile in the dying light. “Want to say my name one last time?” The tom purred teasingly, returning the lick she had given him.

Swiftstream nodded. By this point it was fully dark. She gave him a lick to the muzzle and settled herself off to the side of the tunnel, just out of the wind.

“Of course,” Riverflight mewed, glancing into the darkness of the cave. “I️ have to go the rest of the way alone.”

“Only just far enough to get out of the wind,” Swiftstream said firmly. “I am not a medicine cat, nor am I coming here to receive nine lives, nor am I a leader.”

Riverflight nodded, looking over at the randomly stacked rocks and boulders that created a small cave on the summit. “You should come in too, at least to hide from the wind out here.” The harsh mountain wind was piercing the fur of both cats and making Riverflight shiver.

Swiftstream returned the kiss but didn’t let it go on for long, looking up at the darkening sky. “We’ll have to wait a little before you can go in.”

Unfortunately, it was unlikely that they would find much in the way of prey on the chilly, barren, windswept mountaintop, but finally, they had arrived.  Riverflight turned to Swiftstream, and despite being tired he immediately pressed his muzzle to hers in a happy kiss when they both reached the summit.

Swiftstream was exhausted and hungry by this point, barely managing to keep moving.

Riverflight was grateful they had found the path, as it made progress much easier. By the time the sun began to set they had almost reached the summit.

Eventually, Riverflight began the climb once more, and now that Swiftstream had stopped to wait he got back up to her quickly.

Riverflight had his head down, but he lifted his tail to indicate he was alright. He just needed a minute to recover himself, The tom dizzy as he looked down between his paws.

Swiftstream froze with terror when her mate went skidding downthe mountainside and swayed a little on her paws with relief when he didn’t go far.

Riverflight froze suddenly as he misplaced a paw, and began to skid down the mountainside, his heart dropping. What seemed like it lasted seasons had actually only lasted a heartbeat, however, and the skid had only taken the tom one or two foxlengths down.

Swiftstream trudged through the snow, still having to take care as now they couldn’t see where to put their paws.

Riverflight eagerly hopped into the snowy path, beginning to trudge through the deep piles of the cold stuff behind his mate.

Swiftstream made a triumphant noise when she finally managed to find the path, which was covered in snow but not so deep that they couldn’t move through it. The snow went up to their bellies, but it was still easier than moving off the path.

Riverflight looked off to the side with an annoyed glance, murmuring a curse under his breath. He tried to pick up the pace a little to catch up with Swiftstream, but had to be careful as the gravel easily fell underfoot with each step.

Riverflight stopped for a moment, calling out to his mate after she went over a small rise he had yet to conquer. “Does the terrain change anytime soon!?”

Swiftstream scowled up at the tall mountain, lashing her tail, but kept walking.

Riverflight let out a weary sigh when he glanced upwards to find that they had many, many foxlengths left to go, flinching as a rolling bit of loose rock struck his paw, scaring him more than hurting him.

Swiftstream grimaced, already hating the difficulty of the climb. And they still had a long way to go.
