(Is there a trail for her to follow?)

Rainstorm padded after Spottedpelt, flicking his tail as he scanned their surroundings, keeping an eye out just in case anything came after them while they thought the Clan cats were distracted.

After a while, Spottedpelt glanced up from her work. “I think I found something!” The she-cat began to follow what she thought was the loner’s scent trail, not sure where it would lead, if anywhere.

Puddlepaw stood up and followed after Spottedpelt.

(Sorry lol)

Rainstorm waited patiently; well, patiently for him, anyway.

(Ok. You started using it so I got confused. Razz )

Spottedpelt bounded back over to the log and began to scent the area, standing in different spots around the loner’s home to see if she could pick up on a trail.

(They don’t know his name, I think)

Rainstorm frowned. “Is there a trail you can follow so that we know he left the territory?”

Spottedpelt crept closer, to the point where she stopped just outside the log, and then stuck her head in, sniffing around curiously. After a few heartbeats she turned and returned to Rainstorm and his apprentice at a trot.

“The scent’s stale.” The she-cat reported blandly, though surprised. “Arc seems like he’s been gone for days.”

Rainstorm frowned slightly, using gestures to tell her to see how fresh the scent was. (It wasn’t fresh; Arc seemed to have moved on since they last checked a couple days ago.)

“Strange,” Spottedpelt murmured to herself. Just in case The tom was nearby, Spottedpelt looked over at Rainstorm and simply shook her head to indicate he wasn’t in his log.

When Spottedpelt was able to see into the log, Arc didn’t seem to be home.

Swiftstream whined softly, batting at his face. “Stop that.”

“I’ll go have a look,” volunteered Spottedpelt, dropping low and moving a little closer to the log before beginning to move around it in a wide arc. The Tom did not like visitors, but didn’t seem to notice the clan cats if they stuck beyond a certain distance away. Spottedpelt tried to keep a respectful distance, while still moving to be able to look inside the hollow log.

Riverstar purred loudly as well, covering Swiftstream’s face and muzzle in his licks after the top of his mate’s head was slightly wet.

Rainstorm grimaced at their closeness but didn’t comment o it, determinedly leading them to the log where Arc had made his home.

Swiftstream purred quietly, letting her eyes close as she basked in his affection.

Riverstar leaned into her once more, turning his head to groom at the top of hers, lavishing the space between her ears with loving licks.

Spottedpelt And Puddlepaw nodded, sticking close to Rainstorm as he continued to lead them where they needed to go.

Swiftstream turned her head to press her face against his fur with a sigh. “You better,” she mumbled.

Rainstorm glanced at the calico she-cat and thought her suggestion over for a few moments. Eventually, he nodded reluctantly. “I suppose we should.”

Riverstar snuggled closer to his mate once more, their pelts rubbing together to create a pleasant, warming friction. “I’ll confirm this with Shadowleaf before making any final decision,” He mewed, knowing that that might help allay Swiftstream’s concerns. He was doing his best to make the right decisions for the clan, rather than for himself, but it seemed to him that his interests and the clan’s aligned almost perfectly in this case.

Spottedpelt And Puddlepaw renewed the markings as well. Eventually the She-cat spoke up once more, mewing “Do you think we should cut back to the hollow log after we place the last marker and check on that loner?” The calico distrusted the mysterious tom to say the least, and Riverstar did like when he was updated on the stranger, even if they were all mostly saying that he kept to himself and stayed in his log.

Swiftstream frowned but dipped her head, seeing that his mind was made up even if she thought it unwise. She had no authority over the tom save that of a she-cat over her mate.

Rainstorm scented the air briefly once they reached the border before starting to refresh the markings.

Puddlepaw And Spottedpelt dutifully kept an eye out for intruders, though there had been no sign of any new incursions on the territory since they discovered the new loner living in the hollow log. This was part of the reason the pair had felt OK goofing around a little at the start of the patrol.

“I don’t think the rogues are an imminent threat to us.” Riverstar replied. “The melting snow erased any tracks the two of us might have left, and without some sort of guide thy will have no way of locating our new territory.” The tom glanced around him before returning his eyes to Swiftstream’s. “I would rather our patrol be too strong for what’s out there than have it be too weak.”

Satisfied with the quiet, Rainstorm flicked his tail and continued leading them to the border with the rogues.

Swiftstream eyed him dubiously, doubting her brother-in-law and son could ever work together, but didn’t say anything. After all, Riverstar was the leader, not her. “Five cats is a little excessive, though. We’ll be extra vulnerable to the rogues if you send all of them.”

Both cats quieted down comically fast behind Rainstorm as a result of his renewed threat to get them in trouble. The last thing Puddlepaw needed was to have to face his father again after trying to claw Rainstorm about a half moon ago. The pair still smirked over at one another on occasion, however.

“Amber is the only one that knows the way.” Riverstar pointed out. The rogue had been the sole reason they even knew of the other clan. “And as much as I agree that sending Rainstorm is risky, I feel it’s a necessary evil to make him go with our son. Puddlepaw And Rainstorm must learn to work together.”

Rainstorm narrowed his eyes. “If you don’t stop, I’ll be reporting your goofing off while on a serious patrol,” he warned, voice low.

“Is it true that you used to mate with Glaciertail!?” Puddlepaw exclaimed, a look of amusement on his face as he asked the question as though Rainstorm had said nothing. When he turned around, he was met with Spottedpelt giving him a self-satisfied look.

“We’re on patrol,” Rainstorm snapped irritably. “Save your gossiping until you’re back at camp.” He cast a glare over his shoulder at the two younger cats.

Swiftstream frowned. “Amber only just joined the Clan less than half a moon ago, Puddlepaw’s only been an apprentice for about a moon, and Rainstorm would most likely do something to ruin all chances of gaining an alliance with his attitude. Glaciertail and Grayclpud are fine, though.”

Puddlepaw sputtered with laughter after a few more heartbeats. “No way!” The tom exclaimed in disbelief, apparently having just heard a very juicy bit of gossip. Spottedpelt smirked and nodded to confirm what she’d said.

“Fair enough.” Riverstar Replied, glancing out at the camp again. “I was thinking of sending Rainstorm, Puddlepaw, Amber, and Graycloud. Possibly Glaciertail as well.”

(Rainstorm is cream, like Riverstar)

Rainstorm’s ears twitched at the sound of his name but he felt no desire to listen in. Doubtless they were talking about how horrible he was again, and he had no desire to hear more of it. It was a bit irritating that they were doing it while he was right there, though.

“I’m sure they’re a much larger Clan than us,” Swiftstream pointed out dryly.

Riverstar chuckled softly as the She-cat beside him practically read his mind, turning his head to give her shoulder a few licks.  “I wish I could be sure,” The tom sighed.  “I imagine our own clan trying to go up against the sheer numbers of rogues that Amber described, and I’m not so sure anyone could manage it.”

Spottedpelt had had her flings with Rainstorm in the past, obviously, but it had been many moons since that had happened.  With the gray Tom’s reputation amongst the she-cats of Dimclan tarnished thanks to his treatment of Shadowleaf, the calico in question here somewhat detested The tom.  That wasn’t to say she wouldn’t be open to fucking him- she had her own needs after all- but she wanted a real mate, and she knew he was not the right material.

Deciding to have a little fun and break the awkward silence hanging over the patrol, Spottedpelt leaned over to Puddlepaw.  The apprentice’s opinion of his mentor was no secret, so he leaned in with interest when she whispered something in his ear.

“...Rainstorm...” Spottedpelt was still speaking to Puddlepaw but made his name loud enough for the tom to hear on purpose.
